Description
The position will be responsible for leading, supporting, and advising national, state, and local U.S. projects focused on harm reduction, including projects focused on increasing comprehensive drug user health services at syringe services programs and community outreach for harm reduction drop-in centers.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in community-based harm reduction spaces including drop-in centers, syringe services programs, homeless shelters, and mobile service delivery; project development and management skills; and significant technical expertise in harm reduction and related fields. JSI is seeking a highly motivated individual with expertise in harm reduction, substance use disorders, mental health conditions, behavioral health, hepatitis C, HIV, homelessness, individuals experiencing incarceration, and community re-entry.
Remote employment will be considered, but candidates must reside in a state where JSI is currently registered to do business (AR, AZ, CA, CO, DC, FL, GA, IL, LA, MA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, PA, RI, TN, TX, USVI, VA, VT, WA, WI). Preference for candidates willing and able to work Eastern and Central time zone work hours.
This position has an annual salary range of $95,000-$125,000. JSI offers competitive benefits, including health insurance, dental, vision, and a 401k with a company match.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee and contribute technical expertise for the development of project deliverables, including technical assistance and training tools, reports, and presentations.
- Provide leadership for project design, development, implementation, evaluation, and promotion, including as a project director or senior technical lead. Manage project timelines and budgets.
- Facilitate engagement of partners and community members during project implementation, including federal, state, and local funders; national partner organizations; health departments; community-based organizations; advisory councils; planning groups; syringe services programs; and drug user unions.
- Represent JSI externally through strategic partnerships and through networking, publications, and conference presentations.
- Provide strategic thought leadership for the growth and diversification of JSI’s harm reduction portfolio by contributing to business development efforts, relationship building, proposal writing, external positioning, and internal capacity development.
- Promote the application of best practices within JSI by sharing knowledge and information with colleagues and mentoring or supervising staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree in public health, social work, or related field with at least 10 years of relevant experience. Some experience working in community-based harm reduction programs is strongly preferred; lived experience is highly valued. A combination of relevant professional experience, lived experience, and education will be considered.
- Experience working with communities that are disproportionately affected by U.S. drug policy and the consequences of drug use.
- Beneficial to have expertise in one or more of the following areas: tribal behavioral health, health equity, cannabis policy, or alcohol use.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing health and racial equity in their work.
- Experience incorporating diverse perspectives from people with lived experience into programmatic efforts.
- Understanding of harm reduction priorities and national landscape, such as (but not limited to) systemic drivers of racial disparities in the consequences of drug use, national U.S. drug policy, overdose prevention centers (i.e., supervised consumption spaces), relevant global drug policy, syringe services programs, medications for opioid use disorder, hepatitis C, HIV, and other infectious diseases, the carceral system, housing first initiatives.
- Well-developed skills in leadership, project development, and project management, including establishing processes and protocols, managing timelines and budgets, leading and supporting cross-functional and cross-office teams, and developing relationships through effective communication with internal and external partners.
- Commitment to seeking out, receiving, and providing appreciative and constructive feedback with team members.
- Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by clear presentations, organized written deliverables, prior publications, and/or ability to tailor writing to different audiences.
- Preferred qualification: experience with business development, including knowledge of the funding and partner landscape.
