The US Climate program is advancing climate action on federal, state, and local levels to ensure a sustainable, prosperous and just future for all Americans. Land & Carbon Lab is building a comprehensive system to monitor the world’s land and its nature-based carbon. This initiative provides decision-makers everywhere with the actionable information they need to address the global land squeeze.
Job Highlight:
Reporting to Anchor Manager, you will provide data analysis, GIS-related research outputs, stakeholder outreach, and partnership management, supporting overall objectives of advancing transformative landscape-scale solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This split position will facilitate alignment between Climate and LCL / GFW teams and support acceleration of priority work streams.
You will work with an interdisciplinary and cross-programmatic team to advance nature-based climate solutions that leverage restoration, responsible land use, and management of natural and working landscapes to provide carbon storage and environmental services to communities across the globe, with a focus on the United States. You will also support the analysis of environmental justice and equity impacts of policies and technologies related to land use and nature-based solutions. You will be supported by the US Climate team and the Land and Carbon Lab/Global Forest Watch teams.
What will you do:
Research and Analysis (70%):-
- Support research teams with data analysis, literature reviews, expert consultations, geospatial analyses, and qualitative research
- Help to synergize relevant data and research between LCL and US Climate teams
- Analyze spatial data, including deriving spatial statistics and time series trends, using geo-processing tools
- Collaborate with research teams to develop and implement workflows and new analysis methods to answer research questions related to deforestation, forest management, agriculture, carbon fluxes, land use, restoration, and environmental degradation
- Co-author knowledge products (e.g. reports, Insights articles, data products) and develop data visualizations to communicate research findings
- Develop presentation materials and present at internal/external meetings
- Collaborate with external partners to assess potential research opportunities involving LCL, GFW and non-GFW data
Data Management and GIS Technical Support (20%):-
- Provide additional technical capacity to sub-teams of LCL and GFW to accelerate progress towards meeting objectives and key results.
- Specific projects to be defined based on Research Team needs and priorities
- Process, format, and manage GIS datasets for input into key deliverables for LCL / GFW
- Conduct necessary geospatial analyses for QA/QC of datasets in LCL / GFW platforms
- Provide data analysis for incoming requests and other unique analyses not offered LCL / GFW platforms
- Identify new datasets relevant to LCL / GFW in the context of identified thematic and geographic research priorities
- Write scripts to automate GIS tasks that are performed on a regular basis
Policy and People-Centered Research (10%):-
- Work with the People-Centered Transitions team to incorporate equity and appropriate socio-economic data and methods into research
- Attend internal and external briefings and webinars to track relevant policy and political economy developments, as they are relevant to WRI’s research.
What will you need:
- Education: You have a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, public policy, management or similar
- Experience: You have 2 years of related work experience
- Experience supporting an executive with managing schedules of meetings spanning different the continents
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Experience in GIS software, including ArcGIS Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, and/or QGIS Programming
- Experience using Python, R, SQL, and/or other analysis tools
- Experience independently designing GIS and data analysis methodologies to answer spatial questions
- Experience working with and analyzing large tabular datasets
- Knowledge of environmental and climate justice concepts
- Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English

Potential Salary: Salary range is between 57,000 and 62,000 USD. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
