Job Description
The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is currently seeking a diligent, organized, and enthusiastic recent graduate with strong communications skills and demonstrated interest in democracy and governance programming to assist the NDI Asia-Pacific Team. Up to five temporary project assistant positions may be hired to start in 2023-2024 for a term appointment lasting three months with the possibility of extension for an additional three months, based on performance and/or business need. Project assistants will be assigned to support programming in at least one of the following three Asia-Pacific subteams: Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan; Tibet; Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand; or Indonesia, Malaysia, and North Korea, Pacific Islands, and the Philippines.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Asia-Pacific team with program logistics, including arrangements for airfare, hotel, visas, meeting schedules, and briefing materials for traveling NDI staff, consultants, and delegations;
- Collect and distribute to the regional team summaries of foreign and domestic newspaper, magazine, or journal clippings pertaining to the Asia – Pacific region;
- Attend events and lectures on Asia-Pacific and provide written summaries to team members;
- Attend NDI events and program meetings and provide minutes to team members;
- Assist in providing logistical and administrative support on assigned country programs;
- Assist with administrative tasks such as scanning, photocopying, and reviewing documents, such as leases and contracts, in support of headquarters and field office operations; and
- Conduct research, support reporting needs and participate in special projects as requested.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with coursework in political science, international development, Asian studies, or a related field;
- Must have excellent oral and written proficiency in English ;
- Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in an Asian sub-region;
- High degree of organization, attention to detail, and skill at prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
- Strong research and writing skills;
- Experience living and working in Asia preferred but not required
- Availability to work hours per week for six months
- Able to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work with a team
- Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.)
- Ability to read, write, and speak a relevant language is a plus
Comments:
To be considered for a Temporary Project Assistant at NDI, you must have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and be located in Maryland, D.C., or Virginia. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Bachelor’s degree is $17.00. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Master’s degree is $18.00.
While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environments and to comply with tax and legal obligations, successful candidates must be residents of MD, DC, or VA or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.
