The Artisanal Gold Council: Based in Victoria, Canada, the Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the opportunities, environment, and health of the millions of people involved in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in the developing world, and in doing so, improving the global gold sector.
The AGC consists of a core staff, associates and a council of experts (Board of Directors) in areas of ASGM, economics, environmental impacts, sustainable development, social responsibility, human and environmental health, and gold production and extraction. The AGC works in many different regions of the world.
Position Description: The Artisanal Gold Council is seeking a senior individual, to be based in Victoria, to serve in the Environmental Scientist role with its ASGM development projects. The Environmental Scientist will utilize the resources of local partners, staff expertise from the AGC team in Victoria, and guidance from senior AGC management in the conduct of his/her duties.
The Environmental Scientist must have extensive experience and expertise in the following areas:
- Fundamental scientific background in Earth Science, Environmental Science, and/or Environmental Chemistry
- Producing project proposals, and technical and narrative reporting,
- Developing innovative environmental management systems and strategies
- Carrying out environmental assessments, monitoring, and data collection
Technical
- Experience with analytical instrumentation, manipulation and interpretation of scientific and survey data
- Experience conducting environmental studies in support of permitting and compliance programs
- Understanding of environmental effects surrounding artisanal gold mining, particularly in processing of ore, extraction of gold, factors related to the use of mercury and cyanide, and consumption of and changes in water chemistry
Training & Relationships
- Build environmental monitoring capacity within the organization and in local country partner organizations
- Establish good working relationships with community groups, funders, regulatory agencies, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the project
- Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the project as appropriate
- Strong supervisory skills

- Graduate Degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.)
- Quantitative literacy – strong numerical and analytical skills
- Willing and able to travel to project sites
- Excellent writing skills
- Languages in addition to English (i.e. French, Spanish, others.)
- Minimum 8 years related experience, including senior level experience
- Strong time management & monitoring skills
- Self-motivated
