BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
The IRC is New Jersey’s leading refugee resettlement agency and currently welcomes over 70% of the state’s refugee population. The IRC in New Jersey serves approximately 500 refugees and other humanitarian entrants each year from 24 countries, primarily Cuba and Iraq. The IRC creates opportunities for refugees to start successful new lives and become self-reliant citizens who are well integrated in their new communities.
Volunteer Position: The IRC in New Jersey seeks volunteer tutors to support English language learning among recently arrived adult refugees who have fled persecution in their home country and are rebuilding their lives in New Jersey. Under the supervision of IRC’s Economic Empowerment Associate, volunteer tutors will provide one-on-one and/or small group instruction, promoting English language skills needed to obtain and retain employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Tutors should be able to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants and should be able to interact with diverse populations effectively. Spanish and Arabic speakers are encouraged to apply.
Schedule: IRC will pair tutors with students based on mutual availability. Tutors may support students during formal ESL classes (T.W.Th 9:30-12:30 and M.T.W 6-8:30) or during private individual or small group sessions. Tutors should be able to volunteer at least 3 hours per week.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain instructional experience and IRC will work with volunteers actively enrolled in a TESL certification course and required to engage in a field placement.
