We are looking for an experienced User-centered Designer to join our Digital Platforms and Ecosystems team. Our mission is to unleash the potential of digital platforms to achieve the Foundation’s goals. Specifically, we want to lower transaction costs, reduce friction, improve capital flows and increase innovation across the ecosystems in which we work. This includes work within the foundation and across the charitable sector.As a User-centered Designer at the foundation, you bring clarity and simplicity to complex business problems. You will turn your research into insights and insights into elegant digital experiences. You will work closely with partners, researchers, customers, and team members to define new user experiences expressed through various levels of prototyped output. You will evangelize HCD principals and thought leadership throughout the foundation. You will strive to elevate and deliver high quality designs not just by visualizing ideas, but also as a collaborative problem solver who can contribute to all aspects design development. Success will be dependent on your ability to move fluidly from the big picture to the smallest detail with a deep appreciation of the broader ecosystem of which we work so that the foundation can deliver complex and strategic cross-functional projects, often with tight deadlines. No task is beneath you. You understand the user-centered design process and are able to both conduct research and to facilitate design with clients, customers and team members. The User-centered designer we are looking for enjoys collaborating with strategists, product managers, other designers and technologists to shape great experiences to change philanthropy.
-Bachelor’s degree in HCD, Design, Psychology or another relevant field-Postgraduate qualification or significant experience in a relevant industry-An outstanding portfolio of work demonstrating strong human-centered design capabilities across a diverse range of projects in the commercial or non-profit sector.-Experience with ethnographic research (quantitative and qualitative), divergent exploration, conceptual development and industrial design-5+ years of experience using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign or equivalent tools. Candidate will be expected to provide a representative portfolio of work-Experience and a passion for finding innovative and delightful ways to represent data and insights-Experience with functioning digital applications (web and/or mobile) required-A background with product prototyping and testing, future visioning and strategy development-Ability to evaluate existing products in terms of their persuasiveness, emotional design, and conversion; assess properties for usefulness, usability, visual design, content and branding-Experience in a start-up environment and exposure to cross-discipline teams a big plus-Strong, confident, compelling presenter with developed communication skills-Designs with empathy, creating better future states for our internal process’ and our beneficiaries-Capacity to influence peers / managers and build consensus, while managing through ambiguity-Curiosity and a proven track record of continual learning / self-education in the field of digital designAs part of our standard hiring process for new employees, employment with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
