Job Description
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is currently seeking a diligent, organized, and enthusiastic undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate with strong communication skills and demonstrated interest in governance transparency, integrity, and accountability to assist NDI’s Democratic Governance Team. The Democratic Governance Team is responsible for advising NDI on executive, parliamentary, and subnational government programs, and leading cross-cutting programs on political integrity and democracy ‘delivering’ on development outcomes. The team is also responsible for the Institute’s largest global peer-to-peer exchange programs between global government officials. The Project Assistant will work primarily with the Program Director of the Democratic Governance team in NDI’s Washington, DC office. The anticipated start date for this position is late June or the beginning of July 2022.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with logistical arrangements for delegations and international conferences, which may include virtual interaction with public officials and VIPs
- Draft correspondence to external organizations and contacts
- Conduct desk research and literature reviews
- Draft social media posts, webstories, and other public communications, and contribute to Democratic Governance team maintenance of social media and knowledge management accounts
- Update virtual database of experts and trainers
- Update virtual files on countries/programs
- Conduct special projects as needed
- Provide administrative support to the Democratic Governance team with duties such as scheduling, drafting contracts, and electronic filing
- Record minutes/notes of in-house meetings and draft summary memos
- Support website maintenance and updates, as directed by team and program staff
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or current graduate student in international affairs, political science or a related field;
- Demonstrated interest in international issues related to legislative engagement, democratic transitions, and the role of accountable democratic governance at national or subnational levels;
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, US and foreign government personnel, foreign dignitaries, and NGO community
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
- Experience with event planning and managing logistics strongly desirable;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Fluency in oral and written English; additional language skills desirable, particularly French or Spanish;
- Experience with social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, strongly preferred;
- Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
- Ability to work independently and with others in a fast-paced environment; and
- Weekday availability of 40 hours per week for at least 3 months. Position is eligible for an additional 3-month extension of up to 6 months total, dependent on performance and business need.

Comments
To comply with tax and legal obligations, all candidates for DC-based positions must reside in Maryland, DC or Virginia. While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environments, candidates must be residents of MD, DC or VA or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.
