Senior Manager, Resilient Fisheries, Gulf & East Coast
This position can be performed 100% remotely or out of an East Coast EDF office on a hybrid arrangement.
The Sr. Manager, Resilient Fisheries will play a key role in advancing solutions for sustainable, profitable, and resilient fisheries and fishing communities, with a focus on the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts. They will collaborate internally across EDF and externally with diverse stakeholders, policymakers, community leaders, and scientists to co-develop strategies for climate resilience. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for identifying, building and managing relationships with key stakeholders, planning and facilitating outreach and exchanges with key partners, leading resilience-related advocacy efforts, and identifying new opportunities. This individual will conduct research on key topics related to fisheries and oceans science, management, climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience and communicate relevant findings, best practices, and emerging research with teams across EDF. This position will be an excellent opportunity to use policy insights, analytical and communications skills and a collaborative spirit to advance the concept of climate resilience in meaningful ways. The Sr. Manager will develop and execute key pieces of EDF’s strategy to advance climate resilient fisheries and communities along the Gulf and East Coasts, including efforts to develop and test technologies and approaches for dynamic, real-time management of fisheries, modernize fisheries data management, and increase the uptake of electronic technologies. This individual will work under the direction of the Senior Director, Resilient Fisheries within a global Fisheries and Oceans team that sits in the larger People and Nature team.
- Develop and implement strategies to advance policy and projects in support of resilience goals in partnership with Program leadership, team members across EDF, consultants, partner organizations, and others with particular attention to the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts
- Work across EDF with relevant internal stakeholders to research and develop innovative science and policy solutions for achieving climate resilient fisheries and support the design and development of policy, science, and technological solutions for building climate resilient fisheries and communities
- Develop strategies and engage partners to advance key priorities within regional fishery management councils and at the state level, as appropriate; track issues and identify opportunities related to EDF priorities, including climate resilience and electronic technologies, at the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic and New England regional fishery management councils
- Execute EDF’s efforts to partner with the Highly Migratory Species (HMS) fishery to develop and test approaches to improve climate resilience, ecological impact, and economic profitability; be primary liaison with fishermen, policymakers, scientists, and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of new approaches
- Conduct stakeholder outreach, build relationships, and manage strategic partnerships with relevant policymakers, fishing leaders, scientists, and other stakeholders with the goal of working collaboratively to identify and implement strategies to address climate impacts to fisheries and fishing communities; plan and host meetings, workshops, briefings, and other convenings in support of climate resilience for fisheries and communities
- Engage in key aspects of EDF’s fisheries/oceans national policy portfolio including advocacy efforts at the national, regional, and congressional levels (e.g., meetings, fly-ins etc. between key stakeholders, fisheries leaders and congressional champions)
- Manage key consultants and/or staff relationships to achieve EDF’s goals in target regions
- Engage the media to advance project objectives and communicate project results to a broad array of audiences; develop reports, guidance documents, comment letters, blogs, and other communications materials as part of advocacy efforts
- Conduct research on climate resilience fisheries issues and document research findings in reports, case studies, and other communications and training materials
- Participate in advancing EDF’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values; meaningfully incorporate principles of equity into EDF policy recommendations and stakeholder engagement
- Serve as EDF’s representative in external settings such as conferences, workshops, and other venues
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Political Science or another related field; Advanced degree preferred
- At least eight (8) years of relevant experience in fisheries and oceans science and management, or an advanced degree with six (6) or more years of direct experience
- Deep knowledge in fisheries science, policy, and management required, experience working on issues related to fisheries/oceans technologies and climate adaptation/mitigation/resilience, and working knowledge of the national policy landscape for fisheries/oceans issues
- Interest in building climate resilient fisheries and communities. Experience working with diverse stakeholders to craft and deliver lasting solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to engage U.S. regional fishery management councils, NOAA Fisheries and other relevant regulatory bodies
- Ability to develop and oversee projects from inception to completion; experience in project management and exceptional personal organization and attention to detail
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment; meeting deadlines and responding quickly to changing opportunities
- Strong analytical skills and experience performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work
- Excellent written and public speaking skills with the ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated ability to forge collaborations and work in effective partnerships with nonprofit colleagues, scientists, economists, industry, policymakers, etc.
- Exceptional problem solver who is adaptive and takes personal initiative to identify and resolve problems.
- Proficiency in the use of PCs and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Ability to travel (largely domestically) as needed
