Summary: The Grant Writer is a key member of a cross-functional development and communications team, contributing to the strength of Heartland Alliance’s brand, visibility, and financial success The Grant Writer researches private funding opportunities; writes and submits grants and manages reporting on and fulfillment of grant requirements in collaboration with staff members across the agency; and contributes to the maintenance of the agency’s grant calendar, including submission, renewal and reporting dates and deliverables. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and submits proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, and other grant related materials, under the supervision of the Manager and Director.
- Researches potential funding opportunities to meet identified funding needs; recommends prospects and solicitation strategies to Manager.
- Assists in the maintenance of the Raiser’s Edge database, tracking and updating funding prospects, submission/renewal and reports deadlines, grant documentation, and deliverables and accountabilities.
- Collaborates with staff members across the agency in the development of accurate, timely, and compelling submissions to current and prospective funders, including finance, employee services, information systems, and data management and program teams.
- Assures compliance with all funder specific guidelines and requirements.
- Assists with donor recognition and engagement efforts, as needed.
- Assists with other department initiatives, including special events which may take place in the evenings and on weekends, to advance the organization’s philanthropic objectives.
- Maintains a thorough understanding of the organization’s services, goals, mission and strategic direction.
- Actively participates in team meetings, planning and projects.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field.
- 1 – 3 years of experience in grant writing required.
- Previous experience fundraising for nonprofit healthcare, housing, workforce development, violence prevention, and/or other poverty and human rights-related areas.
- Proven track record of raising money from foundation sources.
- Additional Experience/Competency Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships, take initiative, and manage multiple relationships and deadlines efficiently and effectively
- Knowledge of fundraising information sources
- Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies
- Effective communication skills both oral and written
- Excellent skills with Microsoft Office programs, MS Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Experience or working knowledge of Blackbaud Raisers Edge database.
- Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
- Experience with budget development and monitoring.
- Experience in program development.
- Knowledge of contracts and agreements preferred.
