About This Role This Senior Technical Advisor position is a new position for ChildFund. The Senior Advisor will provide technical support and leadership to strengthen ChildFund International’s global Climate Change adaptation and mitigation program portfolio and enhance program quality on behalf of children in development and humanitarian contexts. The Senior Advisor will be responsible for strengthening ChildFund’s technical expertise in existing approaches, tools, and processes to run climate-smart, environmentally sustainable programs that center local and indigenous knowledge. The Senior Advisor will guide ChildFund to identify opportunities and interventions for climate action and consistently incorporate climate risks and environmental considerations into programs.
The Senior Advisor will foster a child rights-based approach to climate action and work closely with and strengthen our partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure that the voices from those communities, especially women, youth, Indigenous Peoples and other marginalized groups, are informing, driving, and benefitting from approaches to climate adaptation and resilience.
This is a full-time, global position with a fixed term of 2 years. Native or fluent proficiency with English is required. Candidates must have current work authorization a country where ChildFund has operations and proximity to a ChildFund country office. Please note that pay is in local currency. Primary Responsibilities
- Develop a global climate change adaptation and mitigation strategy for ChildFund International.
- Develop, disseminate and monitor implementation of mainstreaming guidelines for integrating climate change risk analysis, adaptation and mitigation into programs and grants proposals in line with ChildFund’s Growing Connections strategy.
- Support the continued expansion and technical improvement of ChildFund’s community and school-based DRR programs,
- Ensure high quality implementation of research, documentation, and evaluation activities on climate interventions, using learning and evidence to guide related programming.
- In collaboration with the Business Development unit and country office staff, identify new business opportunities through technical network.
- Lead technical content of proposals, and/or serve as a contributor or reviewer on the technical design and writing of grant proposals with a climate action focus and/or area of intervention.
- Liaise with donors’ technical advisors and respond to technical queries from donors.
- Provide technical support and advice to country office staff on the strategic planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of natural resource management and other activities that contribute to the mitigation of or adaptation to adverse climate effects.
- Ensure that climate-influenced risks and hazards are adequately considered in program assessments, management plans, and curriculum development.
- Guide the incorporation of climate risk analysis into emergency preparedness, anticipatory action, and emergency-humanitarian response efforts.
- Build capacity of ChildFund staff and implementing partners on technical elements related to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
- Collaborate with other Senior Advisors to support country office teams to plan and execute the roll-out of evidence-based intervention strategies with implementing and technical partners.
- Foster and promote the capture, utilization, and growth of climate action knowledge and learning within across the organization, more broadly.
- Contribute to cross-functional and global teams on specific tasks or projects, as assigned.
- Resource professional network to build and strengthen partnerships with climate, environmental and disaster risk reduction actors, ensuring access to global best practices and evidence.
- Contribute to ChildFund’s advocacy and influencing efforts related to climate change policies.
- Support the generation of climate programming content for internal and external communications.
- Remain alert and responsive to any child safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Child Safeguarding Policy.
Required Competencies
- Fluent or native proficiency with English.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrated understanding of the evidence, science and adaptation strategies to address climate change and its impacts (ongoing and projected) on children in low- and middle-income countries.
- Demonstrated technical competencies in program design, including M&E frameworks, implementation, and evaluation, for climate programs.
- Familiarity with the UN Green Climate Fund, USAID and/or other strategic donors.
- Demonstrated ability to delivery participatory training and capacity building for program design, delivery and assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality, face to face and virtual technical assistance, guidance and coaching to implementing staff and partners.
- Demonstrated representation and networking experience with multilateral agencies, foundations, and other institutions focused on child development and protection programming.
- Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
- Strong organization skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities.
- Strong results orientation.
Required Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience implementing climate environment, climate change and disaster risk reduction and adaptation strategies.
- Demonstrated successful track record in developing effective and responsive project proposals.
- Demonstrated experience with global donors and proven successful record of fostering new and effective partnerships with international partners.
- Demonstrated experience working with children experiencing deprivation, exclusion and vulnerability and their families.
- Bilingual (English with French, Spanish, and/or Portuguese) is desirable.
- Previous experience in a global advisory function for INGO is preferred.
